What You Need to Know About the Grosse Ile Bridge Closure

If you live on or near Grosse Ile, you’ve likely heard the news: the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge (commonly known as the “Free Bridge”)  will be officially closed for repairs — and yes, it’s going to shake things up for daily commuters, residents, and anyone doing business on the island.

So, What’s Happening?

Wayne County will close the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge May 1, 2025 to begin necessary rehabilitation work. This project, aimed at maintaining the safety and longevity of the bridge, will be underway for a eight weeks. As of now, the estimated reopening date is early Summer, but of course, that’s subject to change depending on weather and construction progress.

What Does This Mean for You?

With the Free Bridge out of commission, all vehicle traffic will need to use the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge — which means potential delays during peak hours. For residents, this could affect your daily commute, school drop-offs, Graduation Parties and even deliveries or service appointments.

If you're in real estate, construction, or any profession that involves regular trips on or off the island, it's smart to plan ahead for longer drive times and possible reroutes.

Tips for Navigating the Closure

Here are a few ways to minimize the stress in addition to having a BRIDGE PASS

  • Plan Ahead: Leave earlier than usual, especially during morning and evening rush.

  • Carpool: If you know neighbors or coworkers heading in the same direction, team up.

  • Stay Informed: Follow the Wayne County Roads Division and Grosse Ile Township pages for updates.

  • Support Local: With traffic being a challenge, many island businesses may take a hit — so let’s make an effort to shop and dine locally whenever we can.

A Community That Adapts

This isn’t the first time we’ve had to adjust — and it won’t be the last. But one thing I’ve always admired about Grosse Ile is our strong, supportive community. Whether you’re a resident, business owner, or just passing through, we’ll get through this one day (and detour) at a time.

If you have questions about how this might affect your property plans or real estate activity on the island, feel free to reach out. I’m always here to help!

Stay safe and patient out there!
