Celebrating 250 Years of Grosse Ile: Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future In 2026, our community will reach a monumental milestone—the 250th anniversary of Grosse Ile, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States. This is a rare opportunity to reflect on our deep-rooted history while celebrating the vibrant, collaborative spirit that defines our island today. A Legacy Dating Back to 1776 Our island’s story took a pivotal turn on July 6, 1776, when brothers William and Alexander Macomb acquired the island by co-signing a treaty with 18 chiefs representing the local Potawatomi people. To honor this history, the planning committee is exploring a public showing of the original treaty document at Township Hall—a document currently housed in the Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library.
